A tough, yet still relatively light aluminium wheel set, the HD|30 can be at home on just about any mountain bike. The 30mm internal width rims are an ideal size for 2.4' and 2.5' tires, come pre-taped in Reserves own brilliant tubeless tape for easy tire setup and even include a set of their high flow Fillmore valves. In the middle sits the DT Swiss 350, a hub with well deserved reputation for longevity and easy maintenance, now also using their innovative 'degrees of freedom' internals. Those internals are a little tricky to get our head round, and we have a whole blog coming soon on them; but they feature an adjustable set of free hub internals. Those internals let you either set the wheel up as a conventional wheel with a quick 90T engagement ratchet, or partially de-couple the chain by 10 or 20 degrees for a chainless feel descending and super smooth rear suspension. It sounds like a gimmick, but using the floating inner makes a shockingly large difference to the performance of many full suspension bikes, giving a far quieter feel at the pedals when the rear wheel hits sharp impacts.
Put all that together and you have one heck of a wheel set for the money; if there's a better value wheel set out there, we don't know what it is.
